"Where the Grass is Greener" by Colleen Flaherty

Good news! Colleen Flaherty reports that a new study of some 5.000 humanities and social sciences PhDs finds that those working outside of academia, for example in nonprofits, are significantly happier than their peers working in academic institutions. The study has the potential to help PhD students prepare for and envision a career beyond the professoriate, as most notably the work satisfaction of PhDs working outside the academy is much higher than that of  their tenured peers.

"The History Ph.D.: Beyond ‘Alt-Ac’" by Colleen Flaherty

Colleen Flaherty explains the recommendations of the American Historical Association, who stress that departments set their graduate students up for interdisciplinary and collaborative research experiences that go beyond the theshold of academia. This, the AHA argues, will give graduate students the skills and support to succeed in nonfaculty jobs, and directly counter the implication that these jobs are somehow 'less than' faculty jobs.
