Alt-Ac Networking Meetup

This semester, the HRC has partnered with the Rice Humanities Graduate Student Association (HGSA) to network Rice graduate students with Houston-area NTT and non-academic professionals with Ph.D.'s. Our goal is to supplement traditional résumé and mock interview workshops with in-person networking events that allow Rice Ph.D.'s to make Houston contacts and to help Houston-area professional Ph.D.'s get a better sense of the talent and skills that are already being incubated in Rice humanities doctoral programs.

Our first event had a good turnout, with four established Rice faculty and staff coming to share their experience of working in the academic NTT world, and to talk about opportunities in their organizations. One of our guests even came with a job listing in hand! Many thanks to these members of the Rice community:

  • Dr. Logan Browning, Publisher and Executive Editor of SEL Studies in English Literature 1500–1900
  • Dr. Tracy Volz, Director of Program in Writing and Communication at Rice
  • Dr. Bethany Johnson, Managing Editor of the Journal of Southern History
  • Dr. Jack Stoetzel, Assistant Director of Alumni Programs at Rice

Our next event will host the following guests from Rice and the extended Houston professional Ph.D. network, and will be held on April 21, at 6:30 in the Sewall lobby by the Rice Gallery:

  • Randal Hall, Editor of the Journal of Southern History
  • Bethany Johnson, Managing Editor of the Journal of Southern History
  • Anne Dayton, Research Manager at the McNair Center
  • Desmond Bertrand-Pitts, Executive Director of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum
  • Matt Taylor, Associate Vice Provost for Academic Affairs
  • Andrew Childress, Professor at Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine
  • Joanna O'Leary, Freelance Food Critic and Travel Writer
  • Claire Villarreal, Community Educator for Dawn Mountain Tibetan Buddhist Temple
  • Alejandro Chaoul, Profesor Department of Palliative Care and Rehabilitation Medicine at UT MD Anderson,
  • Christina Brungardt, Deputy Director at the Contemporary Art Museum of Houston
